A gas grill may look simple from the outside, but underneath the cooking grates is a complete system of burners, valves, ignition components, heat shields, gas lines, grease management parts, and structural components that all have to work together correctly.

1. The Cooking Grates
The cooking grates are the most visible part of the grill and one of the most heavily abused.
Depending on the grill, the grates may be made from:

- Flame tamers
- Heat plates
- Flavorizer Bars
- Radiant trays
- Briquette trays
- Ceramic briquettes
Their job is to protect the burners from dripping grease while helping distribute heat across the cooking surface.
They also help vaporize drippings, which contributes to grilled flavor.
Unfortunately, this is also one of the dirtiest areas inside a grill.
Years of grease can become carbonized and form thick, brittle layers.
On some older grills, the heat shields eventually rust through.
Luxury grills may use stainless trays filled with ceramic briquettes. These systems can perform extremely well but require proper cleaning because damaged or grease-saturated briquettes can create excessive flare-ups.
4. Ignition System
Modern grills use several different ignition systems.
You may find:
- Battery-powered spark modules
- Piezo ignition
- Electronic transformers
- Individual spark generators
- Hot-surface ignition
- Crossover ignition systems
When you turn the knob or press the ignition button, electricity travels to an electrode located near the burner.
The electrode creates a spark that ignites the gas.
Common ignition failures include:
- Weak battery
- Corroded battery compartment
- Broken electrode
- Cracked ceramic insulator
- Loose wire
- Grease covering the electrode
- Incorrect spark gap
- Failed ignition module
- Poor electrical grounding
One of the most common complaints we see is:
“My grill is clicking, but it won’t light.”
The clicking sound tells us part of the ignition system is functioning, but it does not necessarily mean the spark is reaching the correct location.
5. Gas Valves
Behind each control knob is a gas valve.
The valve controls how much gas flows to the burner.
As the knob turns, the valve changes the amount of gas being released.
A damaged or contaminated valve may cause:
- Difficulty turning the knob
- No gas flow
- Excessive gas flow
- Irregular flame control
- A burner that will not shut off correctly
Gas valves are important safety components and should not be forced or improperly modified.
6. The Manifold
The manifold is the central gas-distribution pipe behind the control panel.
Gas enters the manifold and is distributed to each burner valve.
Because the manifold sits behind the front control panel, many homeowners never see it.
During certain repair jobs, removing the control panel allows technicians to inspect:
- Valve connections
- Gas fittings
- Ignition wiring
- Corrosion
- Heat damage
- Spider webs or insect contamination
- Loose components
On older grills, hidden problems behind the control panel can explain why simply cleaning the cooking area does not solve performance issues.
7. Regulator
Propane grills usually use a pressure regulator between the propane tank and the grill.
Its job is to reduce and control the gas pressure entering the appliance.
A regulator problem can make a perfectly good grill feel like it is broken.
Common symptoms include:
- Very low flames
- Grill will not exceed low temperatures
- Burners light but remain weak
- Grill works normally and suddenly loses heat
In some cases, the problem is not the burner at all.
It is the gas-delivery system.
8. Grease Tray and Drip Pan
One of the most overlooked parts of any grill is the grease-management system.
Grease travels downward through the firebox and collects in a tray or disposable pan.
When these components are ignored, grease can become thick, rancid, and highly flammable.
Heavy grease buildup can also attract insects and animals.
During professional cleaning, the grease tray should be removed, cleaned, inspected, and replaced if it has rusted through.
9. Firebox
The firebox is the main body surrounding the burners.
On inexpensive grills, fireboxes may eventually rust through.
High-end grills often use heavy stainless steel that can survive for many years.
This is one reason premium grills are often worth repairing.
A 10- or 15-year-old luxury grill may need new burners, briquettes, igniters, and grates while the primary stainless-steel structure remains completely usable.
